Can I update an existing SurveyMonkey dataset?

You can update your SurveyMonkey dataset when you receive more responses or make changes to the survey.

Updating a Dataset with New Responses

If you are simply updating your dataset with new responses, download the latest data from your SurveyMonkey account. Click the yellow Load Dataset button in the gallery.

Then select to Load Survey Data and to Update Existing File. Select the dataset to update and browse for your local file.

Updating a Dataset with Changes to the Survey Before Charts Have Been Created

If you haven't created charts yet, but need to make adjustments to the survey's content, you may make as many changes as you'd like.

Updating a Dataset with Changes to the Survey After Charts Have Been Created

If you intend to make changes to the survey content itself after charts have already been created. A few strict rules are in place to maintain the integrity of your data's calculations. Make changes according to these (5) rules before downloading the updated dataset from SurveyMonkey:

  1. You can edit the wording in the questions and the response options.
  2. You cannot reorder the questions. If Question B was listed as the second position in the original survey, you cannot make reorder it into the fourth position, for example.
  3. You cannot remove or add new response options. If Question C originally had 5 response choices, you cannot add a 6th option nor can you delete choices so that there are 3 or 4 options left.
  4. You cannot reorder the response options. If Question A had the responses Yes, No and Maybe in the original survey, you cannot reorder the responses so that Yes is followed by Maybe.
  5. You can add new questions to the survey but only if they are listed after the original questions.

Once you have checked that these rules have been met, download the latest data from your SurveyMonkey account and follow the steps outlined above.

No Need to Recreate Exisiting Charts After an Update

Charts you have already created based on your data are automatically updated. You do not need to recreate or save the charts again.
